8th United Nations Global Forum on Gender Statistics

With the theme “Building forward fairer with gender data at the centre”, featuring a star line-up of panelists, the event will discuss how gender equality and the production of gender statistics have changed in the aftermath of the pandemic and why. The two-day Forum will focus on ways to improve data and evidence for gender policies, reflecting on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all aspects of women’s and men’s lives, and what it means for the future of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Sustainable Development Impact Summit

For over a year, countries have struggled to address a pandemic that respects no borders, destroys lives and livelihoods, and deepens pre-existing global challenges like inequality, climate change and education. With less than a decade left to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, the fully virtual Sustainable Development Impact Summit 2021, hosted alongside the United Nations General Assembly, will bring together global leaders from diverse sectors, disciplines and geographies. Ensuring the world exits the pandemic stronger than it entered it will only be possible if leaders work together across sectors and borders to share and deploy know-how, innovation and promising approaches and accelerate the recovery.

Toward a Global South Agenda in Open Data and Public Information

We will discuss a paper produced by CIPPEC´s Monitoring and Evaluation program, which focuses on open data on three levels: inside countries, between subnational governments; between these and national governments; and comparing Latin America with Canada, as an exemplary case.

We want to stimulate knowledge on open data publishing standards and improvement strategies, and promote a strategic alliance in the Global South for open data standardization.

Climate Action to Transform Food Systems

Join the World Food Programme (WFP), the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) and CGIAR for a virtual debate on Climate Action to Transform Food Systems. This event will explore the linkages between the UN Food Systems Summit and COP26, and how we can tackle the climate crisis and support food security.

Local Food System Solutions for Building Back Better: Lessons from the Global South

Following the UN Food Systems Summit and leading up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), Southern Voice, the United Nations Foundation (UNF), and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will host a discussion on the value of resilient local food systems in building back better from the COVID-19 pandemic and in the face of climate shocks.

#2030Now

To commemorate the start of the #GlobalDayofAct4SDGs, we accelerate the implementation, monitoring, financing, follow-up, socialization and evaluation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs within the framework of the Decade of Action. We urge people and organizations from all sectors to rethink the five areas of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership to undertake actions that reinforce their message and inspire.

#Sustainable Recovery

The global economy is experiencing its worst recession in 90 years, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable sectors. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an even more marked uneven world. Therefore, this day seeks to lead actions that inspire, connect and mobilize people and organizations from all sectors in favor of a #SustainableRecovery that reduces carbon emissions by up to 25%, as well as to reverse the damages done to the global indicators for the end of poverty.

#BluePlanet

With 90% of the large marine fish species depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are extracting more from the ocean than what can be replenished. To protect and preserve the ocean and all that it sustains, we must create a new balance, rooted in a true understanding of the ocean and how humanity relates to it.

On this day of #BluePlanet we seek to highlight the interrelationship between SDGs 6 and 14.

#SustainableFood

Food systems affect all aspects of human existence. The health of our food systems has a profound impact on the health of our bodies, as well as the health of our environment, our economies and our cultures. When they work well, food systems have the power to unite as families, communities and nations.

This day seeks to make visible why a transformation towards #SustainableFood could lead us to a path of achievement of SDG 2 and 3.

#PlanetarySecurity

This day invites us to think creatively and collectively on how to help everyone recover from COVID-19 and build resilience, and how to transform our world to be more egalitarian, fair, equitable, inclusive, sustainable and healthy.

Therefore, on this day of #PlanetarySecurity we advocate to recover better and achieve a more equitable and peaceful world.

#NetZero

Time is running out for climate justice and science warns us that we must limit global warming to 1.5° C. To do this, net greenhouse gas emissions must be zero by mid-century. That is why we encourage everyone to continue to raise their voices to respond to climate change, protect biodiversity, stop humanity’s war against nature and accelerate efforts to achieve the SDGs on this #ZeroNet day.

#Sustainable Energy

Over the past decade, the use of renewable energy in the electricity sector has increased, improving energy efficiency. Still, millions of people lack electricity and a third of the world’s population uses cooking systems that are dangerous and inefficient. The COVID-19 pandemic is erasing what has been achieved, causing millions of people to lose access to electricity. On this day, let’s seek to inspire, connect and mobilize actions in favor of #SustainableEnergy.

#Harmony With Nature

The biodiversity of our planet is the basis of human well-being, but its rapid decline threatens nature and people alike. The United Nations has identified the main global factors driving the loss of biodiversity: climate change, invasive species, overexploitation of natural resources, pollution and urbanization. On this day of #HarmonyWithNature, we seek to carry out actions that allow us to create awareness about the radical changes that we need from people and industries.

The past, present and future of violence

Join us for a moderated discussion during which the world’s leading researchers will speak about trends in violence and prospects for real prevention and reduction by 2030.

The event honors the life and legacy of Andrew Mack, a giant in the peace and conflict field, who worked tirelessly to advance insight and action on human security.

Global Day Of Act4SDG

As part of the #GlobalDayofAct4SDGs, we invite you to highlight the achievements and increase the knowledge of people and organizations on how to materialize the 17 SDGs and their 169 goals. There needs to be a new commitment from all of us to ensure a sustainable recovery that reduces carbon emissions, conserves natural resources, creates better jobs, promotes gender equality, and addresses growing poverty and inequalities.

#GreenEquality

Unplanned and poorly managed urban development leads to increasing inequality, growing poverty, and disastrous impacts on the environment. Cities and metropolitan areas account for around 70% of global carbon emissions and more than 60% of resource use. This day seeks to raise awareness about the urgent need to promote and act for a #GreenEquality that makes cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable places.

#Educational Response

One year after the crisis, almost 100 million children fail to demonstrate reading skills, while the poorest and most vulnerable are bearing the brunt of the crisis. The risks of returning to the classroom are high and some girls have been forced into child marriage or child labor. This day seeks to accelerate actions that place education based on gender equality at the center of COVID-19 recovery plans.

#TurnItAround

Now is the most critical point in our history as humanity, and the last chance for this turning point to allow us to prosper in well-being and sustainable development. Let’s #TurnItAround for the Decade of Action, and use transformation and restoration to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SDGs and comply with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The Global Partnership for Development contemplated in SDG 17 requires the mobilization of all people and all sectors. Join in!

Digital Equity: Should Internet Access Be Free for Everyone?

Should Internet access be free for everyone? Maybe. But it’s complicated. There are approximately 3 billion people, nearly half the world’s population, who lack reliable, affordable access to the Internet. The experience of the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the chasm growing between connected and unconnected populations—in wealthy nations like the US and in the developing world. We all agree this is a problem, but the debate begins when we discuss viable solutions.
