Overview Collective and Clue Chase NYC have partnered up to bring a climate themed escape room, Sunken City, to debut at the House of Solutions as part of Human Impacts Institute's artist-in-residence program on Governor’s Island. It will challenge visitors to work as a team to unravel clues and puzzles based on sustainable initiatives currently being implemented across the city. Set in a dystopian future NYC affected by climate change, teams will solve puzzles about possible climate solutions to prevent future calamity. This fun and impactful way of engaging people through a hands-on approach defines the importance of working together as a community to combat climate change. The escape room takes about 15 to 20 minutes, offering puzzles and clues that relate to the OneNYC 2050 / Green NYC initiatives and cover sustainability options like solar energy, water filtration, composting and recycling.

Through the work of global photographers, UNDP brings into focus the intertwined threat of rising inequality and climate change. The twin threats of climate change and rising inequality are challenging and unprecedented obstacles for our world. And they are deeply intertwined. While almost no one will be immune to the increasingly savage effects of a heating planet, it’s the poor who are going to suffer most. Inequality is a paradox of our times; in recent decades innovation has exploded, poverty has gone down, and emerging markets are booming. Yet we still see widening and unprecedented gaps between haves and have nots. These glaring discrepancies are not only unfair, they are dangerous. They undermine our political systems, human rights, peace and security, and a sustainable future. And inequality has a powerful accomplice in climate change. It is a cruel irony that the poorest who have done the least to heat the planet, suffer first, and the most, from the consequences. They are losing their culture, history, homes, land, incomes, health, and education. These photographers are bearing witness to our heating and increasingly unequal planet. Holding a mirror to the two threats that we urgently need to recognize and address if we are to survive and create a sustainable future.

This breakfast debate will bring a broad variety of actors across the energy sector – from the demand and supply sides – to provide a checklist of technologies that are cost-effective and will help government navigate our planet out of the present climate emergency. It highlights that to achieve carbon neutrality and unleash the societal benefits of doing so, substantial climate action rests on two principles of action: cutting energy consumption and covering remaining energy consumption with renewables.

Co-organized by the Brookings Institute, George Mason University, the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and the Rutgers Institute for Corporate Social Innovation, we will focus on identifying game-changing priority actions for the Sustainable Development Goals, taking advantage of so many terrific people being in the New York area from around the world for UN General Assembly events later the same week. Primarily focused on participants from academia, we aim to curate small SDG-specific expert groups for informal, action-oriented discussions, working in parallel and in concert across the Goals. Under Chatham House rule, with institutional agendas left at the door, the groups will focus on identifying significant collective steps that could be taken, by the end of 2020, to bend the curve toward 2030 success.

The consequences of climate change are very real and felt on a daily basis by milions of people globally. Girls are particularly vulnerable, as the inequality and discrimination they are subjected to are only amplified by the impacts of climate change. Girls and young women are not just victims: they hold enormous potential to contribute to solutions for climate mitigation and adaption. To date, climate strategies and policies ignore both of these realities: the specific needs of girls and young women are not being addressed and girls and women are being shut out of the decision-making progress on all levels. The event will provide an opportunity to highlight how girls and young women are impacted by climate change and discuss strategies to support their participation and leadership in the climate space.

Climate change is the defining issue of our time and now is the defining moment to do something about it. There is still time to tackle climate change, but it will require an unprecedented effort from all sectors of society. To boost ambition and accelerate actions to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, UN Secretary-General António Guterres will host the 2019 Climate Action Summit on 23 September to meet the climate challenge. The Summit will showcase a leap in collective national political ambition and it will demonstrate massive movements in the real economy in support of the agenda. Together, these developments will send strong market and political signals and inject momentum in the “race to the top” among countries, companies, cities and civil society that is needed to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN High-Level Meeting (UN HLM) on Universal Health Coverage will take place on 23 September 2019 during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) high-level week. This is a great opportunity for all universal health coverage (UHC) champions and advocates to make your voice heard and help mobilise high-level political attention globally and in your countries. The theme of the HLM-UHC is ‘Universal Health Coverage: Moving Together to Build a Healthier World.’ This UN HLM will be the last chance before 2023, the mid-point of the SDGs, to mobilise the highest political support to package the entire health agenda under the umbrella of UHC, and sustain health investments in a harmonised manner. To do this, it is critical to identify how the political declaration on UHC can add value to these efforts and set milestones towards achieving UHC by 2030.

The breakfast launch- generously hosted by Linklaters – will provide an opportunity to learn more about this work directly from BITC’s CEO Amanda Mackenzie OBE and senior business leaders in different sectors. To achieve the SDGs, everyone in the world should be represented in timely data that can help make decisions to improve people’s lives. At a time when half the world is connected to the Internet, more than 2/3 of the world subscribes to a mobile phone, and satellites fly overhead every few minutes, the fact that SDG data lags so far behind is slightly incredible. New technologies, paired with existing data sources, offer an unprecedented opportunity to solve this problem. This event will launch a significant real-time data initiative by UN Deputy-Secretary General Amina Mohammed, co-hosted by Norway & Ghana, in partnership with the World Bank, the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network and several countries that will be showcasing real-time data innovation at scale.

How can we innovate for a stronger, more vibrant future? What’s the role of business in creating a prosperous economy for all? How are businesses in the United States responding to the global Sustainable Development Goals and leading the global private sector in solving critical issues? These questions and many more come up with increasing frequency as global issues like inequality, the opportunity gap, and the need for upskilling increase. The business community in the United States is uniquely positioned to present solutions to these issues because innovation is inherent in the ethos of their corporate structures. However, they cannot do it alone. More and more, communities are finding that collaboration is critical in developing solutions that create real progress. We have seen the start of action through a number of organizations but it will take a collective effort to change the trajectory. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Stanley Black & Decker will co-host a breakfast conversation exploring how businesses can use innovation to address Sustainable Development Goals: 8—promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all; 9—build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation; and 10—reduce inequality within and among countries. We will look both at international and domestic examples and explore ways that U.S. businesses can lead in coalition building and innovation to move the needle on important issues. Join leaders across all sectors to work together on actionable solutions that will create a stronger community and a brighter future. Contact Alex Goodman for more information agoodman@uschamber.com.

The UN considers the world to be off track to deliver the vast majority of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. We are beginning to feel the effects of an ecological crisis through climate change, threatening our biosphere and our society. GeSI’s landmark report confronts these issues head on, and asks what the Digital Industry can and should do to engage with the SDGs and specifically climate action. It provides detailed analysis on the potential for the Digital Industry to drive carbon abatement while supporting the SDGs and economic growth. The report sets out a call for action for the Digital Industry, government, the private sector, and civil society. It details compelling use cases to showcase how to utilize digital technology to support the SDGs. The launch event will share the Report’s compelling findings; feature presentations from global leaders addressing the climate crisis and advancing the SDGs; and provide use cases from Digital Industry leaders, among others.

Champions of the Earth is the United Nations’ flagship global environmental award. It was established by the UN Environment Programme in 2005 to celebrate outstanding figures whose actions have had a transformative positive impact on the environment. Since its launch in 2005, the annual award has recognized 88 laureates, ranging from heads of state to grassroots activists. From world leaders to environmental defenders to technology inventors, these trailblazers are making a difference to protect our planet for the next generation and have inspired critical action on behalf of the environment. Young Champions of the Earth is a global competition that seeks out entrepreneurs and innovators aged 18–30 with big ideas to secure a sustainable future. All these ideas address urgent environmental issues in bold and creative ways. The prize brings their projects to life by providing seed funding and a year-long mentoring programme. Seven young champions will receive their awards at the gala dinner.

Our presentations will share a profile of the left behind in SDG 4 (Access to Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Access to Decent Work) in Peru and Bolivia and the synergies between these two SDGs. Then we will look at the lessons that can be drawn from these two cases for other, similar societies. We believe that the two case studies can shed light on the heterogeneity of results to SDG implementation and the realities of those left behind around the world.
