The New York City Metro Chapter of the Climate Reality Project and the Human Impacts Institute in collaboration with the Trust for Governors Island present a daylong festival of events on Governors Island. This groundbreaking event highlights local action and opportunities for New Yorkers. Our goal is to create a welcoming, “open”, democratic environment in which young people and families and underrepresented groups in the climate fight can freely explore the possibilities for climate action. Highlights include workshops with the Zero Hour NYC team, conversations with renowned climate scientists from Columbia University and climate activists; art, performance, climate humor and many opportunities to get involved or just find out more.

Through the work of global photographers, UNDP brings into focus the intertwined threat of rising inequality and climate change. The twin threats of climate change and rising inequality are challenging and unprecedented obstacles for our world. And they are deeply intertwined. While almost no one will be immune to the increasingly savage effects of a heating planet, it’s the poor who are going to suffer most. Inequality is a paradox of our times; in recent decades innovation has exploded, poverty has gone down, and emerging markets are booming. Yet we still see widening and unprecedented gaps between haves and have nots. These glaring discrepancies are not only unfair, they are dangerous. They undermine our political systems, human rights, peace and security, and a sustainable future. And inequality has a powerful accomplice in climate change. It is a cruel irony that the poorest who have done the least to heat the planet, suffer first, and the most, from the consequences. They are losing their culture, history, homes, land, incomes, health, and education. These photographers are bearing witness to our heating and increasingly unequal planet. Holding a mirror to the two threats that we urgently need to recognize and address if we are to survive and create a sustainable future.

Ten years ago, Mashable, United Nations Foundation, 92nd Street Y, and United Nations Development Programme teamed up to launch a new kind of summit. One where activism would be celebrated, and attendees would be galvanized into action. In the Social Good Summit’s landmark 10th year, we’re tackling the most important issue of our time: climate change. SGS 2019 will bring together global leaders, activists, and brands for an epic day of constructive dialogue and onstage activations. We only have one planet — at SGS 2019, we’ll rally to save it.

Climate change is the defining issue of our time and now is the defining moment to do something about it. There is still time to tackle climate change, but it will require an unprecedented effort from all sectors of society. To boost ambition and accelerate actions to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, UN Secretary-General António Guterres will host the 2019 Climate Action Summit on 23 September to meet the climate challenge. The Summit will showcase a leap in collective national political ambition and it will demonstrate massive movements in the real economy in support of the agenda. Together, these developments will send strong market and political signals and inject momentum in the “race to the top” among countries, companies, cities and civil society that is needed to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN High-Level Meeting (UN HLM) on Universal Health Coverage will take place on 23 September 2019 during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) high-level week. This is a great opportunity for all universal health coverage (UHC) champions and advocates to make your voice heard and help mobilise high-level political attention globally and in your countries. The theme of the HLM-UHC is ‘Universal Health Coverage: Moving Together to Build a Healthier World.’ This UN HLM will be the last chance before 2023, the mid-point of the SDGs, to mobilise the highest political support to package the entire health agenda under the umbrella of UHC, and sustain health investments in a harmonised manner. To do this, it is critical to identify how the political declaration on UHC can add value to these efforts and set milestones towards achieving UHC by 2030.
